The Troutbitten Podcast: Why Do We Miss Fish and Why Do We Lose Fish on a Fly? S3, Ep11
(From June 4, 2022) We all miss fish and lose fish on a fly. Why does it happen? Is it an accident? Is it avoidable? And how can we improve our hookup and landing ratio on the water?
If you’re at the point where you’re worrying about why you are missing and losing fish, then really. . . you know you’re already doing a lot of things right.
Fooling trout is the hard part. Fly fishing is not easy. And trout - especially wild ones - are not forgiving. They don’t grant you much grace. And rarely do trout take lousy presentations. So if you trick a fish into taking your fly, then pat yourself on the back. And when you start to fool them often enough that you notice a trend of missing or losing fi...

The Troutbitten Podcast: Learning a River and Discovering Its Secrets - S3, Ep10

(From May 29, 2022) You can’t really learn a river until you’ve learned to fish. You need some confidence in your skills to cover a section of new water, to fish it well and then walk away with some opinions about what that river holds rather than asking questions about your techniques and decisions. I really appreciated all of the information contained in this podcast. But, I also really appreciate the listener question. It is one I've had in the past, but one that is resurfacing for me. I'm in the market for a new rod (that will be my first real euro nymphing rod). I have read the troutbitten articles on gear and am trying to make a decision. I messaged a few companies about casting dries on their mid-range rods and was basically told by all of them that the rods weren't designed for casting without the weight of a beaded nymph or fly line. I could, of course, explain to them that the weight of the 20lb maxima can give fly line-like performance. But, I also understand their point; right tool for the job. So, while a dry fly could be cast on the mono rig, I was always curious how often the crew here at troutbitten did it. I know this comment is going long, but I did have one question for the troutbitten crew. Someone mentioned that if they have to cast beyond two rod lengths, they switch their dry fly off of the mono rig and onto a more standard fly line setup. Someone else mentioned they fish dry fly on mono up to 20-25ft, sometimes 30 but that is pushing it. When we say "fishing two rod lengths", I assume that is 30ft (not 20ft) from where I stand? Similarly, when we say we fish dries up to 20-25ft on mono, is this 20-25ft from my wading boots or from the tip of my rod? I've asked the more general fly fishing community about this and gotten a lot of different answers. I always assume a 25ft cast is from the rod tip. But others pointed out that if two people cast to the same spot and one person has a shorter rod, that doesn't mean that they casted further. I can see both sides. So, I feel getting an answer from the troutbitten crew will help me better understand how you guys define this. But, more importantly, it will help me set my own expectations and goals for dry fly fishing on the mono rig. Thanks for everything you guys do!!

      Hi there. Good stuff. Thanks for your questions. I have full articles that will answer these well. So I'll be brief here and then give you the links: How far away: From your feet. That's what is consistent when communicating. READ: Troutbitten | How Do You Measure Your Distance troutbitten.com/2024/01/07/qa-how-do-you-measure-your-fishing-distance/ How Often do we throw dry flies on the Mono Rig? Once in a while, but it's not nearly as useful as a fly line. READ: Troutbitten | Dry Flies on the Mono Rig troutbitten.com/2019/09/25/dry-flies-on-the-mono-rig/ What rod? And what can specialized rods do? This is probably my most commonly received question. There's a lot to this answer, because everyone's goals will be different. For the way we fish, for all the things I love to do on the water and enjoy using the fly rod, I will not limit myself by choosing a specialized rod. You're worried that a ten foot four weight won't cast Mono Rigs? It does, and it does it better than most specialized rods because of the way we actually cast things around rather than lob them. I don't want open loops. I want tight loops. I don't like water hauling. I like casting. I'd say what you should be worried about is if an 11 foot 2 weight is any good at casting streamers, indicators, heavier weighted flies, drop shot or even much fun to throw dry flies with. Again, those are my own considerations. Anyone telling you that a 1004 can't do the job on a Mono Rig, (even a micro mono rig) probably hasn't tried it, doesn't understand it, or they just want to sell you something. The 1004 has power. I will choose that every time. Articles for digging into more of those thoughts: The Best Fly Rods for the Mono Rig and Euro Nymphing troutbitten.com/2021/09/22/the-best-fly-rods-for-the-mono-rig-and-euro-nymphing-my-favorite-rods/ Design and Function of the Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig troutbitten.com/2021/03/14/design-and-function-of-the-troutbitten-standard-mono-rig/ READ: Troutbitten | Use a General and Versatile Fly Rod troutbitten.com/2017/10/15/fifty-fly-fishing-tips-12-use-a-versatile-and-general-fly-rod/ Cheers. These episodes are new. As in new to me. Thoroughly enjoying them. One topic I would love to hear you tackle (fly tackle not spin lol) would be how conservation and appreciation ethics factor into our fly fishing experience. • @lukemorris2888
      @lukemorris2888 9 дней назад

      Wets typically have a soft hackle collar and they imitate hatching insects. Nymphs are typically imitating the insects prior to them hatching. I like to swing wets vs dead drifting nymphs. It’s dependent on time of bug life cycle but wets are a niche application of imitating that period of bug life when those bugs are emerging into duns. But you are correct in wondering the difference of the two. It can be tough sometimes

    there are no "secrets" , unless you have access to completely private water. I've fished my entire life, and rarely lived in one place long enough to get intimately familiar with less accessible places. Having lived now for a "long" time in SC Pa, I've realized there are SO MANY people here that there are no secret places. There is no real "spot burning" ... tomorrow someone will be fishing where you caught your fish today. That's just the truth. The vast majority of us who love to fish also have real lives, jobs in which others depend on us, families, homes, etc and realistically are not able to spend days and days per week seeking out "secret" spots...

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten 17 дней назад

      Thanks for your comment. If you listen to the podcast, you'll understand our point. Spot burning most certainly is a problem. It does exist, and it sucks. Mentioning stream names publicly isn't necessary. And those who spend much time on the water quickly understand why. You may not think it matters. You may not care about any "secret" spots. That's cool. But the reason we don't spot burn is out of respect for other people. It's not about you. It's about the rest of the community. Every piece of river is someone's favorite, special spot. Naming that spot and drawing more attention to is just really bad form. Again, if you listen. It's all in there. Here's an article with the same points: troutbitten.com/2017/09/26/respect-spots-man-fishermans-thoughts-friendship-spot-burning/ As far as secrets . . . well, those most certainly exist too. "There are two kinds of secret places: one’s that are truly tucked away somewhere unknown, and ones that lie right underneath a fisherman’s nose. " Here's the article: troutbitten.com/2016/11/16/the-secret/ Cheers.

      @@Troutbitten that's cool... Everyone who has stumbled upon, or worked for and found a good spot obviously has some desire to hold it close to their own vest.... I have yet to find any place in York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lanc, Mifflin, Juniata, or Adams counties which didn't already have boot tracks. Other places and other times? absolutely. Not here.

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten 10 дней назад

      @@JoelSzymczyk Of course everywhere has boot tracks. Of course there are no untouched pieces of river. What I mean by secrets is detailed here, in this article: troutbitten.com/2016/11/16/the-secret/ Here's an excerpt: "There are two kinds of secret places: one’s that are truly tucked away somewhere unknown, and ones that lie right underneath a fisherman’s nose. This place harbors a little of both. Nothing that’s written down in magazines and placed on a list for “destination fishing” can fairly be called a secret. And yet, within these rivers, a deeper realm exists than the traveling angler cannot find. A good river requires your friendship before it reveals its best. You get to know it first. So even blue ribbon water has its guarded locations. There are secret spots that lie open, in plain view, often walked through or passed by for the next deep gut or undercut bank. They are the best-kept secrets of a popular river and worth protecting, just as much as the off-the-grid freestoner that holds a nice population of wild trout, and no one else seems to know about . . ." And why those secrets matter, and why we don't spot burn is in the podcast discussion above and in this article: troutbitten.com/2017/09/26/respect-spots-man-fishermans-thoughts-friendship-spot-burning/ If you give those resources a look and a listen, I think you might see things a little differently, or at least understand a different perspective about secrets and spot burning. Cheers.

      @@Troutbitten I do get it and I don't mean to be argumentive. I know a few square-foot spots minutes from my home in Carlisle where people ignore and walk right by, but hold good fish. If it's defined as a personal thing, I totally understand. I know I'm not the only one who knows the spots. I'm a relative newcomer to the area but I've learned to be observant. It's a struggle... I've been blessed or cursed to live in some rather remote places thanks to Uncle Sam. I've had some astoundingly good fishing in places with NO boot tracks- spot burned wouldn't matter because the reality is not many people would ever get there. This is the opposite- there are maybe "micro-secrets" but someone will be there tomorrow, or was there yesterday. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

    My theory on spot burning is that it can open up the crowded spots that i would love to fish if only there weren't so crowded. Let's be honest. If it takes more than 15 minutes to walk to your spot. Then you could post GPS locations on google Maps, and 95% of people would still never go to them. If they are willing to walk, then im willing to "burn" the spot.

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten 18 дней назад

      Yikes. That sounds rough. But unless I misunderstand you, then the logic doesn't hold either. If only 5 percent of people will go to these places after you spot burn them, how does that open up any water?

    • @nickhumphreys3160
      @nickhumphreys3160 16 дней назад

      @Troutbitten because I have no problem giving away the easy to get spots either, and there are so many good places to fish.

      @Troutbitten 16 дней назад

      I'm still confused by your point. But I do have a problem with naming what you call the "easy spots." I don't think that's for any of us to decide, what is easy or well known enough to name it. How could we possibly determine that objectively? "The reason we don't spot burn is out of respect for other people. It's not about you. It's about the rest of the community. I'm just listening to this now. Very insightful and helpful, as always. Yesterday I found myself switching from a regular tightline to a tightline to an indicator because the lighting conditions were such that I couldn't see my sighter until it was across from me. The indicator was easier to pick up when it entered the water.
